Their candid stories are brimming over with love, happiness, passion, family values and the markings of individuals who have truly lived well and loved life.

Dorothea’s Story (Resident of Ledgewood Bay )

What is your name?
Dorothea

What are the names of your parents and brothers and sisters?
My parents were James and Marion and I had one sister Cynthia who was born exactly 2 years later on the same date as me.

How did your parents choose your name? Does it have a special meaning? Did you have any nicknames?
My nickname is Dottie.

When and where were you born?
I was born on February 16 in Haverhill, Massachusetts.

What kinds of things did your family do together when you were young?
We had horses when I was younger and we rode them.

What did you love to do with your friends?
I loved to jump rope, go to Girl Scouts and 4H and ride horses with my friends.

What schools did you attend? What were your favorite subjects?
I attended Haverhill Elementary and Haverhill High School. My favorite subject was reading.

If married, what is/was your husband’s name? How did he propose?
I married Bob. My friend from UNH and I worked at a summer place in Swanzey, NH. My friend’s boyfriend went to Milford High School with Bob. They both came to the place in Swanzey and we hit it off. Bob went in the service and came home on a furlough and proposed then went back to the war in Germany.

What are your children’s names?
I have two sons, Dale and Jeffrey.

What are some special memories you have about your children?
When my sons were younger they were in Scouts. Bob was a Cub Master and I was a den mother. I made cookies for the meetings and provided refreshments. They were good boys and didn’t fight.

Where have you lived?
I have lived in Haverhill, Plaistow and Milford and Durham for a short time in college.

Have you had jobs? Who did you work for and what did you do?
I was a secretary at Nashua Corp and a receptionist at Weight Watchers.

What are your hidden talents?
I sewed the clothing for my sons when they were young. I baked a lot of cakes, brownies, and bread. I like to sing and play piano.

What did you do to get through the difficult times in your life?
During difficult times in my life, I read the Bible.

Do you have holiday traditions? What do you do for the holidays?
I love Christmas and the idea of gifts. I like making gifts for the kids.

What are some of your favorite things?
Favorite colors? Blue
Favorite flowers? Molly my dog we called her Molly Muffin
Favorite foods? I love chocolate cookies

What are some personal experiences that have especially touched your heart?
Having my boys.

What are your favorite things to do now?
Now, I like to play solitaire and make puzzles.

What do you hope for your children and grandchildren?
They have a good life.

What is your biggest piece of advice?
My biggest piece of advice is to be kind.
