Throughout the month of March we have collaborated to celebrate Women’s History Month and the rich history of the amazing women living in our communities. Their candid stories are brimming over with love, happiness, passion, family values and the markings of individuals who have truly lived well and loved life.

Lynn’s Story (Resident of Avita of Needham)

What is your name?

What are the names of your parents and brothers and sisters?
My parents were Isabel and Don and my sister is Geraldine, she is younger then me by 4 years.

How did your parents choose your name? Does it have a special meaning? Did you have any nicknames?
I always went by my middle name, Judith, but I identify as Lynn now.

When and where were you born?
I was born in 1935 in Orange New Jersey at Orange Memorial Hospital.

What kinds of things did your family do together when you were young?
We went to the Jersey Shore, we had a house there. We enjoyed simple things like picnics, visiting friends. We traveled when my father was in the Navy and stationed in Seattle. We took a road trip there and saw various states along the way. I was around 10 years old.

What did you love to do with your friends?
Sit together and talk- we went to a private school down the street that had a horse and a pony. I spent time taking care of them and riding them. I became interested in horses when I lived in Washington State.

What schools did you attend? What were your favorite subjects?
Junior High was at a private school, Short Hills in Jersey, public high school was in Millburn. I attended fourth and fifth grade in Washington before returning to New Jersey.

If married, what is/was your husband’s name? How did he propose?
My husband is John Wallace. There was no big dramatic proposal, just continuing a friendship that went a little further.

What are your children’s names?
Anne, Sally, Melissa and Lisa

What are some special memories you have about your children?
We’re all close. I have a great relationship with them all, all memories are special.

Where have you lived?
New Jersey, Seattle, Ohio (I went to college there and my grandparents lived there), Cape Cod.

Have you had jobs? Who did you work for and what did you do?
I was a full time Mom.

What are your hidden talents?
Artistic (painting) I went to school for fine arts.

What did you do to get through the difficult times in your life?
I haven’t really had difficult times in my life, I’ve been very lucky. I always focused on what I had, not what I lost. Always accept and acknowledge tragedy, don’t forget the sadness, accept it, and put it where it should be.

Do you have holiday traditions? What do you do for the holidays?
The Christmas tree- we would host Christmas parties, my husband didn’t enjoy them as much. I loved Christmas time and went caroling when I was younger.

What are some of your favorite things? Favorite colors? Favorite flowers? Favorite books? Favorite songs? Favorite foods? Favorite pets?
I enjoy antiques, going into shops and seeing what’s available, bright colors, all kinds of flowers, I don’t read much since I see double from having measles in third grade. I love all kinds of music and food.

What are some personal experiences that have especially touched your heart?
I’ve had a wonderful life, I really have and I’ve enjoyed it. Lots of travel and family experiences in particular. We didn’t have to do lavish things at all we just had to be together.

What are your favorite things to do now?
Spend time with friends, get in the car and drive around to enjoy the scenery. I love architecture and loves to draw floor plans.

What are you favorite experiences to partake in at Avita of Needham?
Being with people, communicate with friends, low key gatherings.

What do you hope for your children and grandchildren?
Continue to have a full, happy life where they are both giving receiving. Enjoy life and do things for others.

What is your biggest piece of advice?
Enjoy yourself, do the best you can with others, give as much as you can and receive from other people Life is about people.

I can’t pick one word...I enjoy life.
