Throughout the month of March we have collaborated to celebrate Women’s History Month and the rich history of the amazing women living in our communities. Their candid stories are brimming over with love, happiness, passion, family values and the markings of individuals who have truly lived well and loved life.

Mary’s Story (Resident of Avita of Stroudwater)

What's your name?
Mary

What are the names of your parents?
My sister was Eileen and we lived together for more then 70 years, neither of us married.

How did your parents choose your name? Does it have a special meaning? Did you have any nicknames?
There was no special meaning but people always did call me Janet (my middle name) instead of Mary until I realized Mary was so much better.

When and where were you born?
I was born in July 1935 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

What kind of things did your family do together when you were young?
We played golf and tennis and like to travel.

What did you love to do with your friends?
Travel, I liked to enjoy the better things in life and explore the world.

What schools did you attend? What were your favorite subjects?
I preferred the social aspect of school. I liked to have fun but of course I went to Catholic School and was taught by Nuns.

Where have you lived?
Boston and Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Have you had jobs? Who did you work for and what did you do?
I was an office manager for St. Elizabeth’s hospital in Brighton, MA in the Radiology Department.

What are your hidden talents?
I’ve won gold golf trophies.

What did you do to get through the difficult times in your life?
My mother and sister were very close and supportive, they always knew what to do in hard times.

Do you have holiday traditions? What do you do for the holidays?
Our traditions were just to spend time with loved ones. We always went to church on all holidays as well.

What are some of your favorite things?
My favorite thing to watch is the Red Sox! I love reading and you can ask anyone here anytime you see me I’m always walking around with a book in my hand (nothing too trashy though).
Color: red and blue, I can’t choose between the two.
Flower: Pink Rose
Now my favorite thing of all time is a Canadian club on the rocks!

What are some personal experiences that have especially touched your heart?
Wendy, a dear friend of mine, coming into my life and making sure everything is okay for me in my new home.

What are your favorite things to do now?
I love taking trips to the ocean.

What are your favorite experiences to partake in at Avita of Stroudwater?
I love the social aspects and all the friendships I have developed here. I like being social, the good music and just having fun. I like to laugh.

What do you hope for your children and grandchildren?
I don’t have any children, but I sure do hope all children today can feel the love and care that I had as a child.

What is your biggest piece of advice?
Honesty is the best policy.
