Their candid stories are brimming over with love, happiness, passion, family values and the markings of individuals who have truly lived well and loved life.

Carol’s Story (Resident of Avita of Needham)

What is your name?

What are the names of your parents and brothers and sisters?
Emily and Joseph were my parents. I had one brother, Paul, who was 14 months younger then me.

How did your parents choose your name? Does it have a special meaning? Did you have any nicknames?
I was born in November close to the holidays so they named me Carol Ann, Carol like in Christmas Carols. I never really had a nickname.

When and where were you born?
I was born in Cambridge, MA at Mount Auburn hospital. I have lived in Newton my whole life.

What kind of things did your family do together when you were young?
We grew up in a huge neighborhood with a lot of kids to play with. In the Winter we would go sledding down the steel hills in the streets. In the Summer we would roller skate on those same streets.

What did you love to do with your friends?
In the summer we would rent a place down the cape in Falmouth for the entire Summer. In the Winter my friends and I would rent a ski lodge in Killington, VT. We loved to spend time together.

What schools did you attend? What were your favorite subjects?
I went to Sacred Heart from 1-12th grade in Newton Center and then I went to Regis College. I only stayed 2 years, which broke my mother's heart, but I did end up going to Chandler school for Women where we studied secretarial work and business.

If married, what is/was your husband’s name? How did he propose?
I was never married and I don’t have any children but I have had a very full life with lots of fun.

Where have you lived?
I have always lived in Newton.

Have you had jobs? What did you do?
I worked for 2 major food manufacturers, William Underwood which was established in 1869, I worked there for 18 years. Their famous product is Deviled Ham. Then I went to work for Welch’s who was established in 1872 and I worked there for 19 years. They are best known for their juices and jams. I worked in Marketing, Sales, HR and was an executive assistant. I loved my work.

What are your hidden talents?
I have no hidden talents but I do like people. I am very social.

What did you do to get through the difficult times in your life?
My father died when I was 6 and my mother had to go out and work. My grandmother came to take care of us while my mother was working. They were both wonderful people.

Do you have holiday traditions? What do you do for the holidays?
Christmas Eve was our big gathering holiday. I just love Christmas.

What are some of your favorite things?
Purple and Green are my favorites, but I like all colors. I love Italian food.

What are some personal experiences that have especially touched your heart?
Too many to list but volunteering at Newton at Home. It was an organization that I have volunteered at for the last 7 years that helps seniors stay in their homes and not have to go somewhere else.

What are your favorite things to do now?
Staying busy, I like to do things. I like that there are options throughout the day here.

What are your favorite experiences to partake in at Avita of Needham?
I like it here. I enjoy the people and I like the trips! They are very interesting. I really enjoyed the trip to the Science Museum the other day. The show on space was really great and Yvette did a great job driving that van!

Faith, Family and Friends. I am blessed with all wonderful ones. I can’t pick just one!
