Throughout the month of March, we have collaborated to celebrate Women’s History Month and the rich history of the amazing women living in our communities. Their candid stories are brimming over with love, happiness, passion, family values and the markings of individuals who have truly lived well and loved life.
Dorothy’s Story (a resident of Autumn Glen at Dartmouth)
What is your name?
Dorothy Gertrude Harrington Lecomte
What are the names of your parents and brothers and sisters?
My parents were Dennis and Helen (Nellie) Harrington, my dad was a Fall River Police Officer.
How did your parents choose your name? Does it have a special meaning? Did you have any nicknames?
I was named after my grandmother Dora (Dorothy was the modern version) everyone called me Dottie.
When and where were you born?
March, 1, 1925
What kids of things did your family do together when you were young?
We had a home on Horseneck Beach until the hurricane of 1938, we also traveled to the mountains of New Hampshire. I traveled from Fall River to New York by ferry on the Old Fall River Line to visit family in New Jersey, my dad was the police officer who would send the ferry’s off.
What did you love to do with your friends?
We would play games, like ball in the street.
What schools did you attend? What were your favorite subjects?
St. Mary’s grammer school, Sacred Heart Academy High School, and Salem State Teacher’s College. My favorite subjects were business and typing, I didn’t like shorthand.
If married, what is/was your husband’s name? How did he propose?
Paul Morris LeComte, he proposed after we got to know each other very well.
What are your children’s names?
David Paul, Ronald Francis, Dorothy Ann, and Margaret Mary.
What are some special memories you have about your children?
We lived in Somerset and were a very close family. We traveled around to New Hampshire and New Jersey.
Where have you lived?
Fall River, Somerset and Florida.
Have you had jobs? Who did you work for and what did you do?
During college I worked at Firestone in the office, I was a High School Teacher in Somerset, Swansea and Durfee High School in Fall River.
What are your hidden talents?
Gardening and baking, crafts and painting.
What did you do to get through the difficult times in your life?
I prayed a lot and talked things out with my parents.
Do you have holiday traditions? What do you do for the holidays?
We had a big Thanksgiving gathering and I loved to decorate at Christmas!
What are some of your favorite things?
Colors-Blue is my favorite color
Flowers-I like pink roses
Books-I enjoy reading historical biographies
Songs-love songs are my favorite
Foods-Chinese Food is my favorite
What are some personal experiences that have especially touched your heart?
Getting my college ring, it is one of my most prized possessions.
What are your favorite things to do now?
I enjoy music and reading the Fall River Herald. I like historical discussions and reminiscing about Fall River.
What are your favorite experiences to partake in at your community?
At Autumn Glen I enjoy trips to museums, restaurants, plays and for rides by Horseneck Beach. We took a trip to Battleship Cove last summer ( I was there when the Battleship Massachusetts came to Fall River and was in the flotilla when it came up the bay) I especially like the arts and crafts and I created our community holiday card.
