Their candid stories are brimming over with love, happiness, passion, family values and the markings of individuals who have truly lived well and loved life.


Jennie’s Story (resident of Stafford Hill)

What is your name and where were you born?

My name is Jennie Whittemore and I was born in 1917 in Amherst, Ohio. My parents were George and Vernie Frederich. I am one of 10 siblings – 6 girls and 4 boys.


What are some of your fondest memories from growing up?

My fondest memories of my childhood include playing card games, long walks and picnics.


What schools did you attend?

I attended Amherst High School as well as Bible School in New York City. My favorite subjects were reading and writing.


Did you marry? What was your proposal story if so?

I married Willard Whittemore. He got down on one knee!

We had seven beautiful children: Shirley, Barbara, John, Roger, George, Winnie, Willard

Willard used to work for the Amish Farmer’s Market selling vegetables, fruits and flowers.


Where have you lived?

I have lived in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, India, and Pakistan. Willard and I were very active in the Baptist Church and spent many years ministering in India and Pakistan. We started our journey to Pakistan by crossing the Atlantic on the Queen Mary. Five of our seven children were born overseas.  I even learned two languages.


What are some of the special memories you have with your children?

I have wonderful memories of my children playing baseball on teams and with neighbors.


What were your family’s holiday traditions?

Our family loved Halloween and marching in the town parade. Sitting around the tree singing Christmas Carols was also a memorable tradition.


What are you favorite things? Favorite colors? Favorite flowers? Favorite books?

Blue and Green. Roses. History books.


What is one of your hidden talents?



What are your favorite experiences to take part in at Stafford Hill?

Painting [in the Artists in Residence Program] and the entertainment.


What are your hopes for your children and grandchildren?

That they come to know the lord.


What is your best advice for a young woman today?

Read the bible, the answer is there.
